Careers in Transport and Logistics made easier via website

(Source: Queensland Transport, 30/9/08)

A newly launched website aims to educate job seekers on employment and training opportunities in the transport and logistics industry.

The Logistics Information Navigation Centre website will increase accessibility to career information for the transport and logistics industry, with the aim to educate job seekers on employment opportunities.

Queensland Transport’s Executive Director (Corporate Office), Jack Noye said the Queensland Government had been working closely with the transport and logistics industry to foster an innovative approach to attracting and retaining people to drive the industry forward.

Mr Noye said the innovative website was designed for the state through a partnership between Queensland Transport, the South Australian Freight Council and the Queensland Transport and Logistics Industry.

"With the amount of freight moved around the country expected to double by 2020, along with the global increase in demand for skills and labour, it is essential we work together to profile the industry for what it is, a dynamic and rapidly growing industry critical to the Australian economy.

"This website highlights the magnitude of the industry and the diverse opportunities it offers for people of all ages and at all stages of their career," Mr Noye said.

The website can be found at www.the-linc.com.au.

For more information about the Logistics Information Navigation Centre website and career opportunities in transport and logistics, contact Queensland Transport on 07 3117 5610 or industry.capability@transport.qld.gov.au.

Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Conference review

The Queensland Supply Chain & Logistics Conference which took place from 31 July to 1 August, was regarded a huge success, with 400 delegates, including procurement, supply chain management and logistics professionals attending the event. CIPS again played a large role in putting together the procurement content for the conference.

D Roche

The whole theme of the conference was based around the future and looking forward to the year 2020. Marcus Barber, Strategic Futurist opened the conference with the topic: “What does the future hold for your business?”

One of the highlights on day 2 was key note speaker and Gen Y expert Peter Sheahan who kept the audience entertained on understanding the mindset of Generation Y and the various ways employers can deal with Gen Y employees.

The conference also featured streams on Relationship Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Supply Chain 2020: People and Skills (which was facilitated by CIPSA MD, Jonathan Dutton), and also featured QLD Committee Chair Dave Allen.

The star trek themed dinner featured guest speaker and Brisbane Broncos legend, Steve Renouf. The night raised over $24,000 for juvenile diabetes.

The night also featured the first awards for Supply Chain and Logistics. CIPSA certificate member Desmond Roche, took the gong for the Transport & Logistics Future Leaders Award, for his contribution so far to the profession. Desmond works as a Commercial Analyst for Powerlink Australia, and has completed CIPS Level 3 through the Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office. Desmond is continuing his studies and is now undertaking Level 4.

 Breakfast Provides Food For Thought

Minimising Global Procurement Costs/ Maximising Local procurement Opportunities

CIPSA Queensland were delighted that 70 people attended its breakfast event at the Sebel Citigate on 2 July. CIPS was fortunate to attract two presenters with extensive knowledge and experience in industry assistance and supplier sourcing programmes.

The event showcased strategies in minimizing global procurement costs and maximizing local procurement opportunities.

David Martin, Assistant State Manager for the Queensland State Office, outlined opportunities where the Australian Government’s business delivery division AusIndustry, is able to assist in minimizing business inputs. He provided valuable information to companies in relation to R&D tax concessions; the EPBS scheme which provides tariff duty concessions on eligible goods for significant projects and the Tradex scheme which provides companies with relief from Customs duty and GST on imported goods intended for re-export within 12 months and the new Clean Business Australia program.

In conjunction, Ben Matthews, Chief Engineer and Industrial Projects Manager with the Industry Capability Network Queensland (ICN) gave, for many present, their first real insight into the valuable service provided to government and the private sector by ICN.

Ben introduced guests to a network of suppliers in the Queensland region capable of supporting their businesses, as well as nationally through the ICN network. Hopefully, those in attendance are not only more aware of ICN’s services but appreciate the importance of making every effort to source locally based suppliers.

These presentations generated a forum for questions and answers. In fielding questions, some excellent examples of sourcing of local industry capability were provided.

The event also served as an opportunity for CIPS Australia to present an award to Griffith University in recognition of their Bachelor of Business (Logistics and Supply Chain Management) being granted MCIPS status. Graduates of this qualification who can evidence three years relevant work experience will be eligible to apply for MCIPS. The award was presented to Dr Louis Sanzogni, Head of the Department of Management, and Ron Fisher, a lecturer in the discipline. The first graduates of this course are expected in 2009.

With thanks to our sponsors. AusIndustry and ICN Queensland.
