CIPS Australia debuts at #49 on BRW fast starters list
CIPS Australia has been included in the prestigious listing of the top 100 fastest growing ‘start-up’ companies in Australia, and is proud to debut at number 49.
As a not-for-profit organisation, CIPS Australia will continue to reinvest the revenue back into the organisation to promote the profession, provide member benefits and develop training and educational opportunities.
3rd Public Sector Procurement forum, 21-22 May, Canberra
Procurement teams throughout the public sector will be asked to play a critical role in helping to achieve the challenging target of $10 billion savings at the heart of this government’s fiscal policy.
Helping to address the subject of public sector procurement, the CIPSA Public Sector Procurement Forum will return to Canberra on 21-22 May, presented in conjunction with the Federal Department of Finance and Deregulation and the Australian Procurement and Construction Council.
Speakers include senior procurement practitioners from both the private and public sectors, federal and state, a number of Australia’s leading consultants and training specialists, and expert presentations from leading technology suppliers.
For further information and to view the entire programme, please visit www.cipsaconferences.com.au
The PDF brochure is available for download here.
Following last year’s 2nd Public sector Procurement forum, CIPSA published a white paper highlighting the “Seven challenges facing public sector procurement”. To view this White Paper visit the direct link here.
CIPSA sponsored research project
Commencing later this month will be a CIPSA sponsored research project looking at how manufacturing organisations can improve their ability to innovate by leveraging relationships with their key suppliers. Evidence suggests that involving suppliers early and extensively in new product development projects can produce significant performance gains, yet they know little about how buyers effectively manage this involvement.
Your support will help shed light on this practice and form the basis of a CIPSA white paper. Dr Benn Lawson of The University of Melbourne and Queen's University Belfast is conducting the research. If you would like to be involved, and to ensure you receive a copy of the survey, please pre-register with CIPSA Research. Email research@cipsa.com.au.

Women In Procurement Forum, 19-20 June
A new event on the calendar, the “Women in Procurement” forum will provide a unique educational and networking opportunity for those interested in the advancement of women within the procurement profession. While procurement has traditionally been a very male-dominated profession, an increasing number of women have achieved success and recognition in recent years.
Featuring a wide variety of speakers, the programme will examine the challenges women face as they try to make their way in the fastest growing profession and what lessons and what lessons can be learned from those who have successfully gone before them. The event will explore what strengths women bring to the profession and identify possible areas of weakness – be they imagined or real.
The focus of this event is about networking as much as learning. With this in mind, the format is slightly unusual, with the event commencing midmorning on 19th June and concluding after breakfast the following morning. For the first time, this event is a “residential-style” conference, with accommodation, lunch, dinner and breakfast costs all included in the conference registration fee.*

CIPS/Croner Reward salary survey results
The latest survey in the UK from CIPS and Croner Reward shows a number of interesting findings relating to salaries in the procurement profession.
There has been a significant increase in Senior procurement managers’ salaries over the last 12 months. Heads of function and senior buyers are paid well above their peers in comparable professions, representing an increase of 10.3 per cent on last year. Salaries increased as follows over the past 12 months: 5 per cent for heads of purchasing; 2.9 per cent for middle managers; 0.4 per cent for junior managers; 6.2 per cent for senior clerical staff; and 6.7 per cent for assistant managers.
The survey also revealed that on average, male buyers are earning more than female buyers, particularly at more senior levels. For procurement directors the average female salary is 25 per cent below that of their male counterparts. Male senior managers are also generally earning more than female directors. It appears that with more junior roles, the pay gap between males and females is less.
Overall, the survey indicated that in the UK, procurement professionals can expect higher basic salaries than comparable roles in other professions, with heads of procurement able to expect 17.6 pre cent more than the national average for other functions and 10.7 per cent for senior managers.

Have your say on T&L recruitment
The T&L Industry is invited to “Have Their Say” on staff recruitment as part of a major survey to be conducted within the next month. Between the 28 April and 9 May many employers in the industry will be contacted by DEEWR about their recent recruitment experiences and asked to participate in a short phone survey.
The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) is excited to be working in consultation with the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) to investigate the recruitment experiences of employers in the logistics industry.
The ALC is assisting DEEWR in identifying recruitment experiences and success experienced by industry in filling vacancies in their businesses within the last twelve months. The results of the survey will enable industry specific information to be gathered on the nature and extent of recruitment difficulties that are affecting employers.
This survey will investigate the:
- Extent of recruitment difficulties in the industry;
- Occupations for which difficulties were most pronounced;
- Causes of recruitment difficulties, including reasons that participants are commonly unsuitable for jobs; and
- Regional differences in recruitment difficulties.
The ALC strongly encourages all industry representatives to be involved in this survey. If your organisation wishes to be involved contact DEEWR to ensure you are included in this survey.
Participation will enable data to be produced that will assist the logistics industry to develop strategies that address the labour supply and skills challenges facing employers. An analysis of the survey findings will be made available to all industry stakeholders.
If you require any further information on this project please contact the 'DEEWR survey hotline’ on 1800 059 439 or email: recruitmentsurveys@deewr.gov.au.
Can outsourced marketing work?
Source: B&T, 11 April 2008
By: Anila Azhar
Although almost all major corporations outsource a portion of their marketing functions, what about other parts of the business such as lead management or customer analytics? Increasingly, expertise in marketing lies outside the walls of most businesses. This realisations has led to a growing number of advertisers partnering up with ad shops for help.
Last week, marketing communications company Twenty20 Communications Group announced an outsourcing marketing partnership deal with home-builder Simonds Homes. Twenty20 will supply strategy, planning, creative and project management for all Simonds’ marketing needs, manage the selection of a new media planning and buying agency, research and print suppliers. And there are other examples of these deep-seated partnerships too – Brisbane-based creative agency De Pasquale has a similar partnership with ABC Learning which continues despite the company’s current stock market woes. Twenty20 also provides a similar service to a number of its other clients including Salmat Limited.
Rod Curtis, Twenty20 director says “a primary benefit of the arrangement is the agency’s ability to provide good quality results at a lower cost..... Read the full story here.

Enhanced Project By-law Scheme information seminar
AusIndustry is the Australian Government’s business program delivery division in the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research. AusIndustry delivers a range of more than 35 business programs - including innovation grants, tax and duty concessions, small business skills development, industry support and venture capital.
One of those programs, the Enhanced Project By-Law Scheme (EPBS), is targeted specifically at major project procurement. The EPBS provides tariff duty concessions for imported capital goods for major investment projects. It incorporates an Australian Industry Participation Plan to encourage the use of Australian industry in projects and global supply chains, and the concession is only available for goods that are not produced in Australia.
To be eligible for the EPBS, the total value of eligible goods for the project must exceed $10 million and the project must be in any one of the following industries: mining, resource processing, food processing, food packaging, manufacturing, agriculture, gas supply, power supply and water supply.
So far, the EPBS has delivered import duty savings of more than $248 million to over 187 companies. These companies also report that developing and implementing an Australian Industry Participation Plan has improved efficiency and saved them money. A diverse range of companies such as Fosters, Cadbury Schweppes, Enertrade, Woodside and Murray Goulburn Co-operative have netted benefits through the EPBS.
On 7 May 2008, AusIndustry will be holding an EPBS Seminar in Melbourne. This seminar will provide a detailed overview of the EPBS, including application processes and how to prepare a good Australian Industry Participation Plan.
To find out more about the EPBS or the EPBS Seminar, contact the AusIndustry hotline on 13 28 46, email aivic@innovation.gov.au. or visit www.ausindustry.gov.au

ICT suppliers will soon have to meet sustainability standards if they want to sell products or services to the government and the wider public sector. If businesses don’t make the grade, they may not win government business.
The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) is devising a sustainable procurement policy, which it expects will become mandatory for central government agencies — and with the expectation it will be adopted by the wider public sector, including local councils.

Mercifully, A Good Harvest…
With another lease of life, this is an opportunity to consider how to mitigate food shortages. Food supply and demand are closely matched. Sudden developments — drought in Australia, pests in Vietnam — create imbalances. Defensive national reactions exacerbate these imbalances. With fears of shortages receding in India after good wheat harvests and with record prospects for rice, now is the time to think and act for the future….
