The Category Management Forum

Conference: The Category Management Forum, 13-14 March 2008, The Grace Hotel Sydney

Category Management ConferenceFollowing a very successful 2007 conferencing season, the 2008 CIPSA conference programme commences with the CIPSA Category Management Forum on the 13th & 14th March at The Grace Hotel in Sydney. This event is designed to offer a practical, hands-on programme for indirect category managers. The seminars will be a mix of one and two hour sessions depending on the category and the complexity of the subject or market. Seminars will include key insights, market dynamics and the practices to ensure an optimal buying performance in each of these specialist areas. The conference will also feature a networking dinner on the evening of Thursday 13th March.

With economic conditions forecast to weaken as we move into 2008, many organizations will re-focus on controlling or cutting costs associated with indirect categories.   Successful indirect management as a whole can put real “runs on the board” with stakeholders and help the procurement team gain real credibility.

Registration for the conference has been designed to allow delegates to select and register for those parts most relevant to them, with full two-day, one-day and half-day tickets available. For full programme and registration details please visit the link here.

Tanner to save with centralised spending

Source: Sydney Morning Herald
Mark Davis Political Correspondent
January 18, 2008

THE Finance Minister, Lindsay Tanner, says the Federal Government may not be using its $30 billion annual spending power to secure the best possible deals from suppliers. He has asked his department to identify goods or services that would be cheaper to buy centrally. The move is part of a cost-cutting drive which Labor has embarked upon to help pay for its election promises while maintaining a strong budget surplus.

It represents an about-face on the Howard government's policy of decentralising responsibility for purchasing to the dozens of departments and agencies.

"I don't want to have the Department of Finance ending up managing the paper-clip purchasing of individual departments," Mr Tanner told the Herald. "But we do have every intention of producing a more centrally co-ordinated procurement model.

"This is a major reform agenda that will deliver substantial cost reductions in the medium term, but it will involve a lot of hard work, a lot of detail and, inevitably, some resistance from
individual agencies."

Mr Tanner would not put a figure on how much could be saved. But he said that with such a
large amount of spending each year, even a small saving in percentage terms would translate into a large dollar amount.

It would not be a "one size fits all" approach. "The Howard government decentralised way too much," he said. "We have no intention of centralising way too much because centralising can wipe out the incentive for agencies to innovate and undermine flexibility."
