Who We Are and What We Do

CIPS Australia is the peak industry body for the procurement profession in Australia and New Zealand.  With almost 2,500 members in Australia and New Zealand, it is dedicated to promoting best-practice, continuous improvement in professional standards and raising awareness of the contribution that procurement and supply management can make to organisations.

CIPS Australia is a subsidiary and delivery arm of The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, the international body serving the procurement and supply profession and one of the world's largest providers of specialist training in all aspects of procurement and supply.  CIPS has around 45,000 members from 138 countries around the world consisting of leading business people, professional managers, academics and people working in the purchasing and supply chain arena.

Mandated to act in the public interest and for the benefit of the procurement profession as a whole, CIPS Australia aims to benefit the procurement profession by:

1.  Acting as a voice for the profession
2.  Helping individuals to become better professionals
3.  Helping organisations improve their procurement practices
4.  Building the global body of knowledge for purchasing and supply

By drawing on its global body of knowledge, CIPS Australia is perfectly placed to assist both individuals and organisations in achieving world best practice in professional procurement practice, policies and procedure.

CIPS Australia Steering Group

The CIPS Australia steering group consists of senior procurement specialists advising CIPS Australia on the professional procurement agenda in Australia.

Terms of reference

  • To remain fully representative of all aspects of the procurement profession throughout Australia 
  • To represent and enable the development and adoption of good practice standards and ethics throughout the profession 
  • To identify and prioritise the professional needs of the Australian marketplace and recommend the key assistance required from its institute 
  • To ensure that CIPS Australia appropriately reflects Australian culture & customs
  • To identify strategic opportunities and key issues for CIPS Australia to
    address within the marketplace to progress the professional
    procurement agenda

CHAIR: Bill Aukett
Strategic Procurement Manager - The University of Adelaide

Bill Aukett
With a background in education and human resources, Bill moved into strategic procurement after being seconded as Development Director of the Australian Universities Procurement Consortium. Bill has extensive experience within a variety of professional development organisations, including as director and immediate past president of the Immediate Past President and Director of the former Australian Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (AIPMM).

VICE CHAIR: Phil Weir
Manager – Government Procurement Development Group - New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development

Phil WeirPrior to joining MED, Phil Weir’s other public sector roles were in the Syndicated Procurement Unit at the State Services Commission, where he developed a community of practice for procurement practitioners across the wider state services, and Contracts and Initiatives Manager at a District Health Board, where one of his responsibilities was the development of collaborative arrangements with other hospitals. Before entering the public sector, Phil worked for a variety of private industry organisations including: manufacturing industries such as paint and sheet metal, wholesale distribution such as paper and telecommunications and in the engineering field. His roles in these companies focussed on supply chain, contract management, logistics and procurement.
Jonathan Dutton FCIPS

Jonathan Dutton
Prior to his appointment at CIPS Australia, Jonathan worked as a freelance consultant and interim manager which included 18 months as COO of the Institute of Marketing in the UK.  Previously he was  marketing director of two UK public companies, Regus and Chubb, and spent two years in sales at Qantas in Sydney and 10 years at British Airways as a procurement manager. He is an economics graduate, completed MCIPS in 1986 and is a fellow of both the CIM and RSA in the UK.
Prof. Guy Callender FCIPS
Foundation Professor & Chair Strategic Procurement - Curtin Business School

Guy Callender FCIPSGuy Callender has a substantial practitioner and professional background in procurement, organisation change, accounting and finance and commercial history. He has published widely in academic and professional circles. He has a strong interest in ensuring that procurement practice benefits from the applied research being conducted in universities. He is also closely involved in developing educational qualifications that enable procurement practitioners to develop procurement as the science of buying and supply. He is involved in numerous professional bodies, edits several academic journals and Principal of the Asia-Pacific Procurement Research Group. Guy was awarded FCIPS in 2007.
Dr John Gattorna MCIPS
Supply Chain Thought Leader
Dr. John Gattorna is an acknowledged 'thought leader' on the global supply chain scene. Over the last 25 years he has researched, consulted, and worked in various capacities in the supply chain field. He established and led the Accenture supply chain practice in Australia, New Zealand and Southern Asia, 1995-2002, and since then has focused his efforts on advising senior management on how to improve the 'alignment' of their  enterprise supply chains with customers, suppliers, and third parties. He is much sought after as a speaker on the international conference circuit, and holds a number of Visiting Professorships at universities in Australia, the UK, Asia and Europe.
Andrea Gregory

Andrea Gregory
Andrea has had a varied career in management within a broad range of industries, spanning research, construction, FMCG, IT and television. For the past 10 years, Andrea has specialised in strategic sourcing and procurement with major New Zealand organisations such as Heinz Wattie, EDS and now Air New Zealand. Andrea is passionate about delivering outcomes that provide best value for money for her organisation through simple processes, great teamwork and appropriate relationships with business partners.

Evelyn Jelliffe
CPO - Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office

 

Evelyn Jelliffe


Evelyn Jelliffe is responsible for the development and implementation of the State Purchasing Policy for the Queensland Government, and the provisions of whole of Government arrangements advice and a procurement training and certification framework. Evelyn has held previous positions in Queensland Purchasing (now Queensland Government Chief Procurement Office), Premier’s Department and Queensland Treasury.

Craig Lardner MCIPS
Group Procurement Director - George Weston Foods


Craig Lardner MCIPSCraig has recently joined George Weston Foods as Group Procurement Director. Prior to joining George Western Foods, he spent many years with the BOC Group, starting with that organisation in 1974 in Sydney. Craig has held management positions in marketing, sales, retailing and customer service. He became responsible for procurement and supply management in Australia. Craig moved to London in 1997 when he was appointed as the Global Director of Procurement for the BOC Group. Craig returned to Australia recently with the BOC Group, concluding his term of 10 years as CPO, before moving to George Weston Foods.

Peter McNamara MCIPS
General Manager Supply Chain Excellence - Rio Tinto Procurement


Peter McNamara MCIPSPeter McNamara has 28 years experience in the resources sector and has held a variety of roles covering technical, product support, marketing and project evaluation functions.  For the past 12 years Peter has been deeply involved in Procurement and Supply Chain Management.   

Peter has been a key architect in the transformation of procurement in Rio Tinto. Peter has been directly involved in the strategic, operational and customer facing aspects of this transformation.  In 2000, Peter spent two years based in the United States establishing the strategic sourcing initiative there.  Peter currently leads improvement initiatives and strategic development work globally as General Manager Supply Chain Excellence.  Most recently Peter has led the procurement integration work arising from Rio Tinto’s $38 billion acquisition of Alcan. 
Peter holds MCIPS, an MBA and BSc.

Tom Pearson MCIPS
Tom Pearson is the former chair of an informal corporate roundtable that was instrumental in inviting CIPS to Australia. With wide procurement experience in Australia and the UK, Tom is also the former Director Strategic Sourcing and Vendor Management at Telstra.
John Tondut MCIPS
Executive Director (government Procurement) - Department of Treasury & Finance WA

John TondutPrior to joining DTF, John Tondut held leadership roles in a number of Western Australian Government change programs, including the facilities management and outsourcing programs of the Building Management Authority, and the commercialisation of the Water Authority. John chairs the Australian Procurement and Construction Council’s Leadership Group that is focusing on sharing procurement reform initiatives across all Australian governments. John was awarded the CIPS Leadership Award at the CIPS Australia Procurement Professional Awards 2007, for his overall contribution to the profession.
